Lottery Scholarships Hurt Poor People? The Hell You Say!

It’s a little to late for lawmakers to come to their senses now.

“What if those poor people stopped playing the lottery?” Harper asked. “If they were smart, they would because they’re not benefiting from it.”

Wow. Never have I read something so eloquently put. The irony in this statement is amazing. Can anyone name an instance of any lottery ever benefiting poor people? Sure, it seems like poor people win the lottery a lot, but isn’t that because they are more likely to buy lottery tickets?  It is debatable whether even the winners have been helped.

We’ve all heard that a lottery is a tax on people who can’t do math.  I’ll take it a step further and say it’s a tax on people who are looking for a way out of their situation–a tax on desperation.

Honestly, I don’t even have a problem with that.  My issue is that the state monopolizes gambling by making only their lottery legal.  What would happen if the state lottery had to compete with private industry for lottery dollars?  One thing is for sure–the payouts would be a lot higher.
