Am I the only one who is discreetly wiping a tear from my eye to learn that Yahoo! is shutting down GeoCities? Back in the day, GeoCities RULED! Honestly, GeoCities hasn’t crossed my mind in years, and I was surprised to read it was pulling this kind of traffic recently:

GeoCities’ traffic has been falling over the past year. According to ComScore, GeoCities unique visitors in the U.S. fell 24 percent in March to 11.5 million unique visitors from 15.1 million in March of 2008. Back in October, 2006, it had 18.9 million uniques.

If you remember the old GeoCities, you can really appreciate how far the web has come in a short period of time with free blogging sites, MySpace, Facebook, etc. It’s kind of sad that the cutting edge concept of allowing everyday people to build an attractive website pioneered by GeoCities has left it so far behind.

What’s next? Yahoo Games?

This one comes complete with removed content and closed comments–fun for everybody.

It seems to me it would be awfully tough to indoctrinate adults who have made a decision on their own to attend a course, especially when, according to the original post, most of these adults seem to share a common viewpoint going in.

Now, indoctrination of children who are more or less forced to a attend a course–that I could imagine. But that would never happen in a public school, right?

I’ll continue to wait patiently for someone in the media other than John Stossel to address that one. I guess to most in the media that isn’t nearly as important as what consenting adults do in a free society while harming absolutely no one.

Thanks to Ken’s efforts along with others at ConserVOLiance.com, a group of East Tennessee bloggers treated to a meeting with Tennessee Gubernatorial candidate Zach Wamp. To his credit, @zachwamp requested these meetups himself in a message to @bluecollarmuse on Twitter. I think this is important for two reasons. First of all, it says to me that Mr. Wamp sees the value in engaging people online and takes initiative to do so. Second, it encourages other candidates to do the same. So we’ll hopefully get a chance to meet other candidates in a small group setting like this.

I’ll give him this…he did his homework. I think he may have checked out a few of the blogs of those who would be attending the meetup tonight. Or, more than likely, his researcher checked them out…dunno. Case in point–he invoked the name of Ron Paul 5 or 6 times throughout his talk. The libertarian streak (he claimed he has one of those too) was pretty strong in the room. He also made a point to champion homeschooling and gun rights early on.

He most definitely had checked out Frankly Speaking. She asked tough questions, and he gave…answers to some of them. He even pre-empted a question he expected her to ask on term limits, saying he himself was bothered by the fact that held his job as Congressman for so long. I believe him when he says we wishes he could’ve/would’ve left Washington earlier, but I suspect that his extended stay has a lot to do with fact that he knew Phil Bredesen was pretty much untouchable in 2006.

When asked about bringing conservatives back to the GOP and keeping them from going third party (the term “rogue” was actually used–heh), he brought up the very valid point that the only way to change the system was from within–if you wait for a third party to change things you are going to be waiting forever. It’s a great point, and since he made it himself, I will have high expectations of him to walk that walk if he’s elected governor.

As for his libertarian streak, Congressman Wamp didn’t seem to be very aware of a reasonably popular idea amongst libertarians and constitutional conservatives to repeal the 17th amendment. It seems like a current conservative/libertarian U.S. Congressman with aspirations of becoming a governor would want to do everything possible to return the power of the States back to the States, right?

Don’t get me wrong, I liked a lot of what I heard. And as The Missus pointed out when I was recapping the meetup to her, this is exactly what I hoped for from Ron Paul’s Presidential campaign–I wanted the conversation shifted to the libertarian direction. I’m seeing a lot of evidence that the GOP is starting to notice that (1) young people can be excited and mobilized by the concepts of liberty and (2) they pretty much stunk the place up for eight solid years.

As far as governor-specific questions go, I heard two things from Mr. Wamp that I really liked. One, “absolutely no income tax”…I love that. Two, he would like to look at eliminating the estate tax in TN. His point was that the state collects $93M in estate taxes each year, but that could probably be made up in increased sales tax revenues if retirees were encouraged to move here (and consequently spend money) because of the elimination of the estate tax.

As I said, I think Congressman Wamp, and the rest of the establishment Republicans for that matter, are starting to get the picture that they need to return to a “get-government-out-of-my-life” message. I don’t think he has the act down pat yet, but I give him credit for trying. I’m already more interested in this race!

And let me say this…

I greatly appreciate Zach Wamp’s willingness to meet with us and commend him for spending only 1/4 of the time speaking and 3/4 of the time fielding what were, at times, very tough questions from people he was 100% sure would put their impressions on Al Gore’s internet for all the world to see.

Links to others who were in attendance are coming! Here are thoughts form Blue Collar Muse.

$75 Billion doesn’t sound like as much money now as it did back in September of last year. That’s when hundreds of billions first started being thrown out like beads at a Mardi Gras parade.

Now all you have to do is prove that you have an ample level of moral fiscal depravity and the guy on the float will reach into his endless supply of plastic and satisfy your every desire. The problem is, someone else’s moral depravity is at least fun to watch. Their fiscal depravity takes food out of your mouth and threatens your future.

Let me break this down…tell me which of these statements are wrong.

* We cannot continue to throw good money after bad. It’s just stupid.

* We cannot continue to strap future generations with debt. It’s just immoral.

* We cannot continue to reward people who make bad decisions and act irresponsibly by punishing people who make good decisions and act responsibly. Immoral and stupid.

* We cannot (individually or collectively) borrow our way into a strong long-term financial position. Stupid.

* We cannot (individually or collectively) spend our way into a strong long-term financial position. Stupid.

* Propping up companies that someone has deemed “too big to fail” does nothing but keep smaller companies who are agile and innovative out of the market. We need big companies to fail so that we can move forward. For you “progressives” out there, this is called progress–look it up.

* If you truly believe that either the Democrat or Republican party is noble, benevolent, and altruistic, you are truly stupid. I’m talking about under-a-car-sleeping-dog stupid. Not ignorant–stupid. You cannot be helped. Go ahead and get an education. Read lots of books. Put some letters after your name. You may not be ignorant any more, but you’ll still be stupid.

Let’s stop with “the Republicans did (fill in Obama talking point)” and “the Democrats did (fill in Limbaugh talking point)”. Let’s make a simple change to the way we phrase these sentences. How about, “People in government did (pick your own pet peeve)”? Do you see the problem now?

See, the problem isn’t that “something must be done”. The problem is that something is always being “done”.

Stop trying to fix everything for everyone. In fact stop trying to “fix” anything for anybody. Beyond campaigning, you guys don’t know what the hell you are doing. It’s ok–this is a complicated problem, and no one guy knows how to fix it. But maybe the first step out of the hole is to stop digging. Here’s an idea…

If the shit has to hit the fan at some point (and it does), then by all means, let’s just let the shit hit the fan. The sooner the shit hits the fan, the sooner we can start cleaning up and get rid of that shit smell.

Or we could just let the shit keep piling up, keep slowing down the fan, (which, by the way, is the only thing bringing in fresh air) and hope that the next “stimulus” plan includes a “free” pair of boots and shit-resistant pancho for every man, woman, and child.

Twitter has definitely changed a lot of things for lots of bloggers. To compound matters, Twitter changes things with Facebook too. I’ve been thinking about the best way to handle all three of these things for a while. There are few issues that come up which make it almost impossible to not annoy someone. Usually I wouldn’t care about that, but how to deal with these things has been bothering me as well:

I like Twitter updates fed into Facebook, but I’m finding that most people on Facebook don’t realize that I’m not actually on Facebook when they show up. So I end up getting replies on my status, an email about those replies (yes, I know I can suppress those), along with the replies I’m actually expecting on Twitter itself. Worlds collide! I don’t want to disable the emails because I still want to be notified when people are replying to my actual status updates.

I like Twitter to be updated when I write a new post here. I realize that’s annoying for a lot of people as a general concept, but my tweet/post ratio is probably close to 30/1, so it can’t be that annoying. And the stuff I write here matches up pretty well with the stuff I tweet.

I like hitting the “Post to Twitter” button to tweet what I find interesting in my browser, but that seems like it may be annoying for my regular Twitter followers, and it may not match up with what I tweet.

I’d like to be able to make short blog posts out of these tweets from the browser, Instapundit style, but that format doesn’t really fit in here either. Most of what shows up here is what I’m thinking, usually a little longer than 140 characters, and is coming from me instead of just a one line comment on someone else’s post.

Online reputation management is becoming a bigger deal. Since I own www.scottadcox.com, I figured I should go ahead and use it.

Here’s what I’ve come up with…

Removed my ‘sadcox’ Twitter feed from my Facebook status updates. I figure I can still use Facebook’s built in status update, possibly for more personal type stuff. So…don’t expect too many updates there…heh. That move is more for me than for other people.

Set up a new ‘scottadcox’ Twitter account, mainly to handle tweets coming off the browser. So there shouldn’t be any more “Reading:” tweets on my sadcox account unless I make a mistake. I’ll be using the ‘sadcox’ account more for conversation, replies, etc. I still consider that my “real” Twitter account. No need to follow the new one unless you just want to see what I’m reading. In other words, no interaction on that account.

Set up a new blog, www.scottadcox.com. This will mostly be made up of the tweets from the browser, which will let me post Insty-style. I even found a theme that works well for that type of posting. It will be very frequent with limited commentary, like Twitter for people who don’t use Twitter.

I don’t really have any plans for monetizing the new blog–it’s mostly just for linking out. There may be some VERY unobtrusive ads later, but that’s not really on the table at this point. The basic idea is to make something easy to read and pop lots of interesting stuff. I’ve felt pretty limited here in not being able to do that just because of the layout, and I’m not really interested in completely shifting gears here and changing what I’ve been doing.

Maybe I’ll change my mind later…dunno. For now I’m going to put the feed from the new blog in the sidebar here. Hopefully these two will end up working together somehow, and I’ll figure out exactly how that will happen according to the bumps in the road I’m sure to encounter.
