Here’s what sucks the most about the suspension of the cash for clunkers program…

The gov’ment spends time and resources to develop a program to help a struggling industry by giving away “free” money (bad enough).

The companies in said industry spend time and resources to participate in the program on advertising and compliance.

*Shock* People actually want free money, and they participate.

Gov’ment freaks out because something it decided to do is working exactly as you would expect it to–a rare occurrence.

Gov’ment decides to suspend program, once again changing the rules of how the economy works.

Don’t get me wrong…I’m happy to know that one more subsidy is being axed. Tell me again how we can have stability in a system with unstable parameters.

WBIR did a story on my buddy McNabb’s office/residential building he’s been working on. He bought this horrible looking building on Broadway a couple of years ago, and he’s put a lot of hard work into it. I was over there about a month ago to see the almost complete office space. He’s also putting in a green roof and opening up the courtyard of the building as green space with bike racks and free Wi-Fi.

Not bad for a guy I’ve often slapped in the back of the head and called Space Monkey on multiple occasions.

Besides the obviously great job he’s done turning what once was an eyesore into a useful and attractive space, I love is that he’s renaming it The Taggart Building. Personally, I would have gone with Roark Towers, but The Fountainhead influenced me more than Atlas Shrugged.

Whether you’ve read his speech from Atlas Shrugged or not, it’s worth reading the whole thing (again).

When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion–when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing–when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors–when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you–when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice–you may know that your society is doomed. Money is so noble a medium that is does not compete with guns and it does not make terms with brutality. It will not permit a country to survive as half-property, half-loot.

…

Blood, whips and guns–or dollars. Take your choice–there is no other–and your time is running out.

That last line sounds like it came out of a rap song. I’d love to hear Eminem rap the whole speech.

This makes me chuckle. There’s already talk of where taxes will be raised to pay for a national health care plan. Tobacco, alcohol, soft drinks, employer health plans, and HSAs are all being discussed. All the big gov’ment advocates are going to be in for a rude awakening when they realize that all of these are going to be shot down due to successful lobbying by special interest groups.

That’s what happens when you have a big, powerful gov’ment. Everybody who can afford to pay for a seat at the table of power gets to decide what happens. And the people who can’t pay the cover charge, well…

It would almost…I said ALMOST…be worth having national health care just to witness the outrage that is sure to occur one way the other. Taxes are going to be drastically raised to pay for it. Who ultimately pays those taxes? The consumer.

Don’t like that scenario? Don’t worry, there’s always the (likely) possibility they’ll just print more money and you’ll pay the cost indirectly through hyper-inflation. Of course, then I’m sure there will be a proposed national food program…everyone has a right to food after all.

Do you believe the New Deal prolonged the Great Depression? If so, this post may not be for you. You may want to prepare yourself for absolute terror and look at this.

If you’re still reading, I’m going to assume you are freaked out by clowns, or you believe The New Deal helped the country out of the Great Depression.

If you do believe massive government spending and programs are the way out of bad economic times, are you ok with waiting as long as our grandparents waited then for things to turn around now?

We’ve been told we’re in the midst of the “worst economic crisis since the Great Depression“. How long should we expect for the bailouts/stimulus/Obama budged to start paying off?

Four years? Two years?

When “government must do something”, what do you feel is a reasonable amount of time to wait for “something” to take affect? And what are your expectations? Are there goals that should be met? In that time period what, to you, are acceptable numbers for:

the DJIA and/or S&P 500

unemployment

federal deficit

quarter over quarter economic growth

inflation

What do you think the country’s expectations are for these numbers? More importantly, do you think the country collectively is willing to wait that long?

What happens if the clock runs out and expectations have not been met?

Over on Facebook, a few of my friends have made some interesting remarks in their updates. One is an accountant who is fed up with the complexity and oppression of our tax laws. A couple of others are just hard working guys venting about, well, the complexity and oppression of our tax laws.

It made me laugh that one of them was actually called an “oversimplifying Republican” in the comments. Now that’s funny. How ironic is it to accuse someone of oversimplifying while stating in the same sentence that anyone who disagrees with big government and rampant spending is a Republican? Last I checked (I’ve been checking for the last 8 years), Republicans aren’t exactly proponents of small government and controlled spending.

That brings me to my next point.

It is truly disgusting to see the Republican establishment try to claim the Tea Party movement as their own. We don’t have to look too far back in history to find a point in time when Republicans were happy to vote in favor of bailouts and laugh down anyone who supported keeping the federal gov’ment within its Constitutional limits. Of course, it’s easy to vote against this garbage now that you know it will pass anyway. I realize you guys are out of ideas and completely out of touch with your base, but this is too little too late.

We’re not forgetting. At least I’m not.

And as far as the media is concerned…oh well. While I hope the coverage is there (and I think it will be locally), I don’t see much point in complaining about the fact that they aren’t giving Tea Parties their due. If anything, it gives credence to the argument that the media is in the bag for the current powers that be.

On my short-post-blog today I posted a link to this CNN article about the increase in taxes tobacco companies are paying to the feds and how that has raised prices for consumers. The price increase reflects not only the increase in taxes, but also accounts for the expected loss of sales for both the manufacturers and retailers. In short, a $0.62 tax increase can result in a price increase to the consumer of ~$0.90.

So, for all of those who are in favor of “punishing” evil corporations like oil companies who make a profit by raising their taxes, do you get it now? Do you finally understand that it isn’t really the company who pays the tax, it’s the end user? Do you now see how increasing their cost is actually a tax increase on regular people?

It doesn’t really matter if you get it or not–the people doing the taxing do. These are the same people who do you the “favor” of automatically withholding your income tax from every paycheck so you don’t realize how much you are actually paying.

Last weekend Ron Paul spoke at the Campaign for Liberty conference in St. Louis. Click over to watch the videos of his speech…I haven’t had a chance to see them all yet. But I did catch this big “ouch” in the transcript…

The Federal Reserve was brought into existence in 1913 because they said they needed a “lender of last resort” and they needed a “stable currency”. Now, I don’t think it is a lender of last resort, I think it’s become a spender of first resort.

Technically, they are more of a printer than a spender. Congress is turning spending duties over to the Executive branch. And who can blame them? Baseball season is just around the corner, and they have to concern themselves with making sure no one is using steroids.

Last week, Zach Wamp met with us and emphasized the importance he placed on individual liberty, fiscal responsibility, and the Constitution. I’m happy to see that he, along with TN Representatives Jimmy Duncan and Marsha Blackburn, are co-sponsoring a bill to audit the Federal Reserve. However, it’s a little disappointing to see Wamp and Duncan would both vote in favor of seemingly unconstitutional taxing of the AIG bonuses.

Wanna know what I think (I assume you do because you are reading this)? I think most of these reps knew the taxing of the AIG bonuses is unconstitutional and knew that it will never happen. Therefore, it’s a win/win. They think they will look like they are sticking up for the “little guy” to their constituency, all the while knowing their arses are covered for voting on legislation that allowed the bonuses to be paid in the first place.

“I made a mistake, and I tried to reconcile it, but the Supreme Court shot it down” or some such nonsense.

There is no disagreement that we need action by our government, a recovery plan that will help to jumpstart the economy.”

— PRESIDENT-ELECT BARACK OBAMA, JANUARY 9 , 2009

But then again, what do these guys know?

it is a triumph of hope over experience to believe that more government spending will help the U.S. today. To improve the economy, policy makers should focus on reforms that remove impediments to work, saving, investment and production. Lower tax rates and a reduction in the burden of government are the best ways of using fiscal policy to boost growth.

College professors take it on the chin for being super-liberal a lot of time, and that may be true amongst English and Journalism faculty, but it’s nice to see these guys standing up for some common sense and putting their name out there.

Most of my engineering professors seemed to be pretty fiscally conservative as well. Their choice of clothing and cars indicated a strong tendency towards saving money. I can say that since I have similar tastes in fashion and transportation.

Oh yeah…got this at Cato
